ARGUMENTATIVE TEXT

What is a green roof

Green roofs as it sound are roofs that have plants from different kind of vegetation sown on it with the specific kind of soil so plants can grow free and without problems this helps on different things such as decorating and giving more life to the roofs and also this kind of roofs have the capacity to reduce heat considerably produced by the sun in summer.

This also works as a microhabitat in the roofs and buildings, in the structure of a green roof there are six main layers of different materials that make it up: Vegetation, substrate, filter, drainage, anti-matrix barrier, waterproofing, insolation sheet, structure support.

Vegetable layer are composed of plants, grasses and flowers that will be sown on the surface, the material for plant growth it’s a nutritious mixture of nursery soil and other organic compounds. The filtration layer or fabric contains the soil and the roots but allows the passage of water to drain. Drainage layer and rainwater collection are composed of sand or other large grain materials that allow the passage of water but not other solid compounds, and store or channel for later use.The Root barrier are the roots of plants. and the last one is the waterproof membrane, this stops the passage of water and moisture to the structural part of the roof.

Way of construction

There are two types of green roofs, called semi-intensive or extensive; they are classified by greater or lesser intensity of care. Its characteristics are the following:

Intensive: this type of green roof implies a greater thickness of soil or substrate (from 30 cm) to cultivate large plants, grass, shrubs and small trees; It demands a lot of work: fertilize, fumigate, irrigate and other care. In addition, the intensive ceilings allow to include orchards, even small fruit trees. It requires a solid structure that supports the weight of the substrate layer and larger plants.

Extensive: In this other type of green roof we find the opposite: they take a very thin layer of soil (between 5 and 10 cm) and are designed to need minimum attention, at most, pay once a year and perhaps weed annually. With which is ideal for green roofs, we explain below. so they do not want to spend a lot of time

Advantage and disadvantages for having green roof

There are benefits to the environment, one of the biggest benefits of green roofs is to reduce the heat island of large cities, also reduce flooding, because they retain a good part of the rainwater from storms. The benefits for having a green roof in your house is enable unused spaces in your home where you can relax in a conventional roof, if you have green roof you can read the newspaper, have a coffee, relax or do whatever you want there. they reduce the use of public sewage systems, reduce their maintenance and prolong their useful life and reducing greenhouse gases, the necessary expenses to comply with regulations and limitations in this regard decrease.

Also are benefits to Health having 1m2 of grass generates the oxygen required by a person throughout the year, 1m2 of grass retains 130 grams of dust per year and this benefits you for your respiratory system. It is also proven that those people who have vegetation at your workplace improve your performance and reduce work hassles

One of the disadvantages of having green roof it’s more expensive to have a green roof between 25% and 50% than a conventional roof also requires more care since it is necessary to take care of the plants. In its structure it requires more load capacity since they are necessary for all the layers that are needed in a green roof.

THIS IS WHY WE SHOULD HAVE GREEN ROOF…

Now days some of the main problems in our planet is that we are not taking care of it as we should and that is affecting us in very different ways, something we can do to reduce pollution caused by greenhouse gases is the use of green roofs. The use of green roofs has several environmental benefits, by the use of this the large cities are more sustainable and also, they are a better place to live.

In this text I will explain different reasons why we all should install green roofs in our homes and how this will beneficiate you and how your helping the environment.

To start with, Green roofs help to reduce heat in large cities a 65%, this number were collected by the GSA which is an agency specialized on the installation of green roofs in big companies such as the US Coast Guard ubicated in Washington DC, As we know heat is increasing every day due to the pollution that is caused from different factors that affects the ozone layer, a lot of people think green roofs are expensive and they can’t afford it but it all depends in the size of the roof that you want to transform into a green roof, The EPA estimates that the cost of installing a green roof starts at around $10 per square foot for simpler extensive roofing, and $25 per square foot for intensive roofs. Annual maintenance costs for either type may range from 75 cents to $1.50 per square foot. But let’s not forget all the benefits we will have and also that we will have it for a long period of time.

GSA has also demonstrated that green roofs make roofs 40% cooler, this happens thanks to the protection from solar beams that all the vegetation brings, the more vegetation is planted the more is going to protect. As a consequence, a lot of vegetation can make a heavier roof and this can cause the roof to be damaged, so a stronger support must be added to the roof so that it can support the weight of all materials and vegetation. Adding a stronger support is not expensive, the price may vary but non of the price exceeds from 200 dollars.

The release of carbon dioxide is one of the key contributing factors to global warming and as such, the government has been charged with meeting stringent EU targets by 2020. Green roofs are ideal for doing exactly this. According to the UKQBC, 44% of total CO2 emissions are released from buildings. In a similar vein to the point above, green roofs reduce the need for air conditioning, whilst also ensuring less heat is required for the winter. Both air con and the generation of heat create CO2. There is no better way to reduce carbon dioxide than using a natural method as well as green roofs, since it is 100% ecological.

In conclusion

Green roofs have much more benefits than disadvantages, their disadvantages are small compared to the great benefits they can bring to your life, they are 100% natural and can improve both the quality of life of people as well as care for the environment , they may require a small investment but it is an investment that will be with you for a long period of time and that you will also enjoy knowing that you help in different ways to your city, you and the environment.
